Profiles in Teaching with Technology

S2 E1: Fernando Navarro

Since it's the National Arts in Education week, we wanted to bring you something really special, and couldn't think of anyone better to profile than Fernando Navarro. A performing pianist and composer hailing from Guadalajara, Mexico, Fernando never expected to find himself teaching in Kansas City, MO. After relocating to the United States, Navarro found a home at the Kansas City International Academy. The student population at KCIA is approximately 75% asylees and speaks at least 17 different languages.

Navarro, an immigrant himself, understood personally just how difficult it could be for a student in a new country where their native language wasn't the predominant spoken language. Utilizing Soundtrap and the MusicFirst Classroom, he was able to get his students not only composing, but collaborating across cultures, languages, and experiences. Music has become their common bond, and the results are astonishing.
