S4 E7: Dr. Joshua Boyd

Dr. Joshua Boyd is the Director of Bands at Newnan High School in Newnan, Georgia.  His philosophy of music education is based on the idea of empowering students to “make music in their own voice.”  To do this, the band program offers opportunities such as concert band, jazz band, percussion ensemble, small chamber ensembles, marching band, and more.  The Newnan band program offers many diverse opportunities including opportunities to create music, direct music, and even compose music. When an EF4 tornado hit Newnan High School and the surrounding areas, Dr. Boyd partnered with band parents to organize the band students into serving teams that assisted with recovery efforts at shelters, places of worship, and several not for profit organizations.  The band staff adopted the motto, “There is no place for despair, when you are delivering hope.”  The tornado destroyed the building and all items the band owned, including students’ personal instruments.  In response, Dr. Boyd formed partnerships with local corporations, businesses, other music educators, and community members to make sure every student had an instrument to play on.   Today, the band plays inside of a makeshift tent while the school awaits repairs.  When asked about his greatest accomplishment, Dr. Boyd said this,  “The greatest accomplishment of my career is my students and parents.  On March 26, 2021 a tragedy struck our community.  However, on March 27, 2021, my students and band parents worked hard to show our community that music is hope.  There is no time to hurt when one delivers hope.  There is no greater honor than dedicating my life to make music with students, parents, and people who believe in making a difference.”
