Sight Reading Factory Adds Rhythm-Only Auto Assessment
Sight Reading Factory (SRF) has been one of our favorite online tools for building student sight-reading skills across different levels for over a decade now. And they just rolled out a big update that we’re excited to share: Rhythm-Only Auto Assessment!
This new feature allows students to focus specifically on rhythm-without the added challenge of pitch. For teachers looking to target rhythmic development, this offers some fantastic new options. To access this new feature, just click on Rhythm-only from the main menu (after you click Start Practicing). You’ll then go through selecting the same types of parameters as you would for other SRF exercises, including difficulty level and time signature.

Once you're in, you can even turn on Auto Assessment. Students can tap out rhythms either by tapping their device screen (on mobile) or using their keyboard (space bar, V, or B keys) on a computer or Chromebook.
After completing the exercise, students get instant feedback showing how accurately they performed:
Green note heads = correct rhythm and duration
Yellow note heads = slightly early or late
Red note heads = missed or incorrect durations

You can also set the rigor of the assessment—Lenient, Moderate, or Strict—based on your students’ needs. If you’re just practicing, you can adjust the rigor afterward too, which is a really smart addition.
So why is this new feature so exciting?
Separating rhythm from pitch is a huge help, especially for younger students, students who are newer to playing an instrument, or classes focused on foundational skills like steady beat, subdivision, and rhythmic accuracy. It helps students really zero in on timing and note values without worrying about fingerings or pitches.
As always with SRF, customization is key: teachers can adjust time signatures, difficulty levels, number of measures, and rhythmic elements to fit their curriculum goals. And because each exercise is automatically generated, students get a fresh challenge every time—perfect for warm-ups, sub plans, small group work, or home practice.
Plus, the new auto assessment feature supports differentiated learning:
Beginners can stick with basic note values.
More advanced students can work on syncopation and changing meters.
With SRF’s classroom interface, you can easily assign exercises and review each student’s results later, saving time on manual grading while tracking progress.
The visual feedback makes it easy for students to practice independently too—which is a huge bonus for building confidence and encouraging self-guided learning.
Overall, the Rhythm-Only Auto Assessment is a practical and powerful addition to Sight Reading Factory’s toolkit. If rhythm is a skill you’re targeting in your curriculum (and let’s be honest, when isn’t it?), this feature will fit right into your classroom or private studio practice.
