Introducing the MusicFirst Academy: Learning Designed for Music Educators
At MusicFirst, we have always believed that great music education starts with great educators and that technology tools are precisely that: tools. When used intentionally and within the context of strong pedagogy, they can deepen musicianship, support learning, and open new possibilities for students. When used without purpose, they’re just another thing teachers are asked to manage.
For years, we have partnered with teachers, schools, and districts to provide innovative digital tools that support music learning in meaningful & measurable ways. Today, we are excited to take that commitment even further with the launch of the MusicFirst Academy—a dedicated learning hub designed to support music educators at every stage of their journey.
MusicFirst Academy is more than a collection of tutorials. It is a learning experience built specifically for music educators, by music educators; designed with flexibility, accessibility, and professional growth at its core.
Why We Created the MusicFirst Academy
As our community, content library, and suite of tools have grown, we consistently heard two needs from educators:
First, teachers wanted foundational, structured training on MusicFirst’s software—training that went beyond quick-start guides and feature walkthroughs. They wanted to understand not just how the tools work, but why they matter and when they make instructional sense.
Second, educators were looking for high-quality professional development that was relevant to music classrooms, respected their time, and aligned with the realities of teaching music today. Too often, music teachers are asked to fit into PD models that weren’t designed with them in mind.
MusicFirst Academy was created to meet both of these needs.
Foundational Training on Our Software
MusicFirst offers a powerful ecosystem of tools designed to support assessment, practice, creativity, and musical growth. With that power comes complexity, and we believe educators deserve learning experiences that help them feel confident and successful using our tools.
The Academy provides structured coursework that supports educators in:
- Getting started with MusicFirst tools
- Building confidence with core features and software
- Applying tools directly to rehearsal, assessment, and instruction
- Designing musically meaningful learning experiences with technology
Our goal is not just product knowledge, but also to help teachers see how technology can meaningfully support musicianship.
A Provider of Music Education Professional Development
Music education-specific professional development is often limited or difficult to access. Outside of state and national music education conferences, many teachers lack opportunities for ongoing, discipline-specific learning. At the district level, PD is often broad and generalized, leaving music educators to adapt content that wasn’t created with their classrooms in mind.
MusicFirst Academy is intentionally designed to serve as a trusted provider of music education professional development, grounded in real classroom practice and teacher experience. While we are starting with a course on AI in music education, our goal is to expand the offering to wide range of pedagogical topics relevant to music educators.
Our courses focus on:
Authentic music teaching and learning
Pedagogical decision-making
Practical strategies that can be implemented immediately
Reflective practice and long-term growth
This is PD created with music educators in mind—relevant, flexible, and respectful of teachers’ time and expertise.
Flexible Course Formats Designed for Educators
Music teachers juggle rehearsals, performances, schedules, and students with diverse needs. MusicFirst Academy was built to fit into real teaching lives.
Free Courses
The Academy includes free courses designed to help educators get started, explore new ideas, and build confidence with MusicFirst tools. These courses are ideal for:
- New users
- Trial users
- Teachers exploring MusicFirst for the first time
- Schools onboarding new staff
Free courses ensure that high-quality learning is accessible to all educators, regardless of budget or location. They also serve as foundational learning that allows paid professional development to be more targeted and customizable for schools and districts.
Paid Professional Development Courses
For educators seeking deeper learning, the Academy also offers paid professional development courses. While we are launching with one paid flagship course on AI in Music Education, we will be adding more courses soon, so we want you to check back often. These courses are designed to provide deeper exploration, structured learning pathways, and opportunities for reflection and application.
Paid courses are ideal for:
Professional growth goals
District PD initiatives
Teachers seeking documentation of learning
Educators looking to deepen instructional practice with technology
Self-Paced, Asynchronous, and Modular Learning
All MusicFirst Academy courses are self-paced and asynchronous, allowing educators to learn when it works best for them—during planning time, after rehearsals, or over school breaks. Courses are modular by design. Teachers can always see where they are, track their progress, and engage with short lessons that can be completed in manageable chunks. Interactive elements like quizzes and surveys reinforce learning without adding unnecessary pressure.
There are no required live sessions, meaning:
- Teachers can move at their own pace
- Learning fits into busy schedules
- Content is available whenever it’s needed
Courses vary in length to meet different needs, including:
- Microlearning experiences under 30 minutes
- Short courses between 30 and 60 minutes
- Longer courses totaling more than 60 minutes
This structure supports meaningful learning without overwhelming educators.
Certificates of Completion
Many MusicFirst Academy course—including all paid PD courses—offer certificates of completion with PD hours. These certificates can be used for:
Professional development documentation
District or state PD requirements (where applicable)
Personal professional growth records
Clear expectations and transparent outcomes make it easy for educators and administrators alike to recognize the value of Academy learning. Check out our frequently asked questions page to learn more.
Who I Am, Who We Are, and Why This Matters
My name is Dr. Giovanna Cruz, and I am the Head of Professional Development at MusicFirst. Before stepping into this role, I spent over a decade working in music education technology, customer success, and educator training, and before that, I spent six years as a public-school music teacher.
Like many teachers, I know firsthand how hard it can be to find professional development that truly supports music educators—PD that understands our classrooms, our rehearsal cycles, and our instructional goals. I’ve experienced the challenges that music educators face in the real world. I also know how transformative the right tools and training can be when they are thoughtfully paired.
MusicFirst is a company built by educators and musicians who care deeply about music learning. We know how transformative music is in students’ lives (and in our own). We believe that:
Music education deserves specialized tools and training
Teachers deserve learning that respects their expertise
Technology should serve musicianship, not replace it
MusicFirst Academy is the natural extension of those beliefs.
